Supporting today’s literacy standards

Across the country, many states are strengthening their literacy requirements. They are adopting Science of Reading standards and laws that focus on teaching foundational reading skills clearly and directly.

These changes aim to improve literacy rates and help students build strong reading foundations.

ULS has already received approval in Ohio and Virginia based on this content. Work is ongoing to gain approval in additional states.

This expanded phonics program helps educators meet state requirements with confidence while delivering instruction grounded in research.

Built for clear and structured instruction

The six-series progression allows educators to move from foundational to advanced phonics skills in a clear, intentional sequence.

By organizing instruction into manageable courses and lessons, the program helps educators:

  • Deliver explicit, systematic phonics instruction
  • Support students at different stages of reading development
  • Build skills progressively with structured practice
  • Align classroom instruction with state literacy expectations

For educators, this provides clarity and confidence in planning.

For students, it creates a consistent pathway to developing decoding, fluency, and reading independence.

Strengthening reading outcomes

The Science of Reading content in ULS is based on research and structured literacy practices.

With six complete phonics series, educators have the tools to teach foundational skills clearly and consistently.

This helps more students access grade-level content and build lasting reading skills.

It’s a meaningful step forward in supporting strong, research-based reading instruction in today’s classrooms.
